Voices of Tomorrow – A Socially Responsible Business

If April showers truly do bring May flowers, what will April’s blog posts ranging from Kravet’s Visualizer and Fine Fiber rugs from Jaipur Living to Typical Consumer Design Mistakes and how today’s luxury home furnishings will become Tomorrow’s Antiques bring us in May? How about a company that is leading the way in socially responsible business internationally, Jaipur Living?

Yes but, are they actually “leading the way,” you may ask. Our response is a simple question: Who else do you know who started a business based on providing a sustainable livelihood through viable wages, ongoing artisanal training, full autonomy, and an increased sense of Self; with both increased self-confidence and pride?

We’ll wait.

The Jaipur Living Vision

We like to think that Jaipur can put a rug under anyone’s feet, from the homes of their artisans in India to consumers worldwide. (See what we did there?)

In an article titled Voices of Tomorrow: How Jaipur Living’s CEO is reshaping the global rug business, we are treated to a description of the vision that led to the creation of the world’s most beautiful, socially responsible rug manufacturer. Written by Jeena Sharma and published at RetailBrew.com, the article is presented in the form of an interview with Jaipur Living CEO Asha Chaudhary, daughter of founder Nand Kishore Chaudhary.

Forty-five years after the company's founding, with just two looms and nine artisans, Ms. Chaudhary now oversees the US operations of the worldwide operation from their headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Yet, “The core of the business hasn’t changed. It’s still rooted in love and compassion for the artisans.”

This all began with her father’s unique vision: “My dad not only provided them with sustainable wages and livelihood, but really he helped them build their creative capabilities. He has really elevated their pride – the pride and dignity that they feel in the work that they do – which has really made a huge impact on them as entrepreneurs.”

“We’ve also done a lot of capability-building programs for the artisans. One [is] called Manchaha, which is … where we take some of our unused raw materials, some of our most talented artisans, and let them make any designs that come to their mind … Seeing their journey from being a worker to an artisan to an artist is … an incredibly powerful, empowering story. We also do a lot of work around providing them with basic necessities … like healthcare [and] alternative education for some of the artists and women [who] are in the villages.” (link added)
